Wolfwalkers is a story of friendship, love and resistance to oppression. A territory full of magic, elves, fairies, goblins and sacred forests, Ireland is, in the 17th century, about to be civilized by the English protector lord. Celtic folklore is then the backdrop for a story about ancestry and the cult of mother earth with the metaphor of transmuting people into wolves when they fall asleep.
Robyn is a hunter (iconographically similar to Robin Hood, the prince of thieves) while Meh – with red hair a la Merida de Valente – is a Celtic princess who inhabits an Irish forest with her mother and her pack of enchanted wolves. The youth duo, the city and the savage, tone the narrative that is allegorically rich not only for the details and nuances of the trace of the animation, which refers to the pictorial art of the time, but also the plot that brings possibilities of subversion to the absolutely imposed order . To children and adults Wolfwalkers are a sensorial and adventurous treat.
As the archetype of the wild woman in the book by psychoanalyst Clarissa Pinkola-Estes, Wolfwalkers identifies in the deepest and most dormant psyche the essence of the female soul, with the protagonism and connection between Robyn and Meh as the guiding thread, which even transforms the hunting father of first.
“The metaphors to return women to their full instinctive wild senses are complex. Within us are the spiritual bones of the wild woman. Within us is the potential to regain our flesh, like the creature we once were. Within us are the bones for us to change as well as our world. Within us are our breath, our truth and our longings – the song, the hymn of creation that we always want to sing ”
By howling, by the so-called unison and the essence of the wild woman is that wolves, Wolfwalkers can protect the pack. A motherless Robyn finds herself and denies the fate imposed on the women of that time, the pantry, the home, the house as a prison. The way in which the animation is done, especially when portraying the citadel as a square and flat space, gives a magnificent contrast to the density and multicolored layers of the circular forest. Sequences set inside the forest, with the Celtic runes adorned by the climatic soundtrack (one of the songs is by pop singer Aurora) rock the dreams, the women and girls who run with the wolves and recognize the essential force of nature.
